The goal of the Salaama network is to promote individual and collective transformation, encourage prosocial attitudes, develop life skills, and connect individuals to prosocial networks that can facilitate rehabilitation and reintegration.

On top of enhancing their general, specialized, and practical knowledge, the Salaama network members will combine government and civil society efforts to establish the first robust national community-led program, curriculum, and protocol for resocialization preparation aimed at Maldivians returning from conflict zones—particularly women and children.

Our Salaama toolkit uses a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach that pulls from diverse perspectives. These include trauma-informed care, cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, SMART (Small, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) planning strategies, mentorship, life coaching and life skills training, countering terrorism1,, as well as disengagement and deradicalisation-oriented programming, among others. These perspectives will promote knowledge, skill, self-care, prosocial development, and spiritual and scientific growth and empowerment among returnees, while allowing them to benefit from the advantages of storytelling.

For the first time, the Salaama network will also aim to bridge pre-release engagements with post-release in-community support for individuals repatriated to Maldives from conflict zones. These efforts will provide state authorities as well as communities with access to tailored resources to facilitate the reintegration of those returning home after serving time in correctional facilities. This will help to make our communities safe and healthy while promoting a sense of belonging for all.

The Salaama toolkit will be available shortly for network members only.
